How To Disable Autorun in Windows

Autorun is a default function of the Windows OS. Windows thought that users would like this feature especially when we’re playing our DVD and media disk. The bad thing about autorun is it is easily exploited by malwares. When a removable disk is inserted in our computer the malware then automatically spreads itself without the notifying the user. To prevent malwares to spread, disabling Autorun would really do.

Here are some simple steps to do it:

WinXP

Click Start then hit Run
on the Run window, type gpedit.msc
The gpedit.msc window will then popout
Browse to User Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> System
You’ll see many options that you may use, but for now find Turn off Autoplay
find turn off autoplay on and select the All drives option
Mark the properties enabled
Click OK

Congratulations! You have successfully disabled Autoplay in your WinXP computer.

Win Vista

Click the Windows Icon and go to Control Panel
Change the style to Classic View, so that it’s easy to find. You may revert it after you’ve finished patching everything.
Open Autoplay
on the very top you will see a checkbox with the text Use Autoplay for all Media devices, uncheck it.
You may also change this settings depending on how you want to Play certain file types, but I’d rather turn all autoplay off just to be safe.

Congratulations! You have successfully disabled Autoplay in your WinVista computer.
